UNE 27800:2020 – A new Standard for Seaport Passenger Boarding Bridges

ADELTE, an engineering group based in Barcelona and the world-leading specialist in the design and manufacture of Seaport Passenger Boarding Bridges, is pleased to announce that the Spanish Association for Standardisation, UNE, has recently approved and published UNE 27800:2020, a new standard for Seaport Passenger Boarding Bridges (SPBBs) destined for cruise and ferry terminals.

This new Spanish standard specifies safety and security requirements, as well as performance and operating specifications for SPBBs, which are used to service all types of cruise ships and ferries. The standard is intended to improve fulfilment of the stipulations laid out in the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, setting specific and vital minimum criteria for safe, durable and practical boarding bridges.

For over a decade, various interest groups in the Spanish cruise and ferry industries have insisted on a need to regulate this type of equipment. Currently, there is no harmonized European standard under the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, the European regulation governing SPBBs. ADELTE therefore took the initiative in 2018 to promote the creation of a working group within the UNE’s Standardization Technical Committee CTN 27, with the elaboration of a reference standard as goal. This group has worked during two years under a consensus basis and the participation of all stakeholders: cruise terminal operators, cruise ship builders, cruise lines, certification bodies and engineering companies.

The standard specifies technical requirements to minimize hazards that may arise during the commissioning, operation and maintenance of SPBBs for cruise ships and ferries when used as intended -even foreseeing the most common errors in use-, according to manufacturers’ or authorized representatives’ instructions. It also stipulates other essential requirements as recommended by port authorities, cruise and ferry companies, as well as cruise and ferry operators, terminal operators and engineering companies.

UNE 27800:2020 applies to fixed and mobile bridges for boarding and disembarking passengers to cruise ships and ferries. It is applicable from the interface with the terminal building or pier, to the connection with the ship, including the fixed tunnels that are part of a SPBB.

ADELTE relaunches Apronaut at Inter Airport Europe 2019

Barcelona, 19th September 2019 – ADELTE, an engineering group based in Barcelona and the world’s leading specialist in the design and manufacture of Airport and Seaport Passenger Boarding Bridges will officially relaunch its revamped Passenger Boarding Bridge (PBB) docking simulator Apronaut at the world’s leading exhibition for airport equipment “Inter Airport Europe” on 8-11 October 2019 in Munich

ADELTE, already well-known for their PBB and Preconditioned Air Unit (PCA) product lines, returns to Inter Airport this year with their improved PBB docking simulator Apronaut. Apronaut is the world’s first software-based PBB docking simulator, allowing comprehensive training for PBB operators in a zero-risk environment. The simulator allows staff to train repeatedly, performing docking and undocking procedures on any type of aircraft, quickly gaining skills and confidence without the need to risk real equipment or take PBBs out of service.

Apronaut was first launched at Inter Airport in 2011 and, due to an increased interest from airports around the globe, the system has been redeveloped over the past year to include a flat screen displaying the aircraft and PBB cabin, and a real control & drive console. Thanks to Apronaut’s custom-made hardware and software, users can practice docking in the most realistic way possible, using control panels matching those of any PBB at any airport in the world, and visualising various types of aircrafts and airport environments as well as the movements of a PBB, adapted to any situation.  With HD graphics, real-time control, a tailor-made screen, and a real operator desk, Apronaut’s realistic virtual apron environment offers a rich interactive multimedia experience in which trainees can make mistakes without consequences.

Apronaut’s patented software generates detailed reports on user training, allowing supervisors to monitor progress, compare performance statistics, and assess whether trainees are ready to obtain their PBB operator certificate. The simulator’s active internet connection, secure remote database, and specially designed Apronaut Cloud website means that users can view reports and manage training from any PC or mobile device. Last but not least, supervisors obtain specific insights through Apronaut’s data-analytics, for example

  • At which stands trainees have most problems with docking manoeuvres (related to time, incoherent actions, etc.)
  • Which are the most common mistakes made by trainees or operators carrying out retraining
  • Global and specific KPI’s, established by specific stand, aircraft or operator.

During the Inter Airport Europe trade-show, attendees are invited to visit the ADELTE stand number 1442 to experience the future of PBB docking first-hand. Visitors can either see a live demonstration or even practice with the Apronaut docking simulator themselves.

US Cruise Ports select ADELTE

Barcelona, 15th March 2019 – ADELTE, an engineering company based in Barcelona and the world leading specialist in the design and manufacture of Seaport and Airport Passenger Boarding Bridges has been contracted by three cruise ports in the USA to deliver a total of six Seaport Passenger Boarding Bridges (SPBBs) to their cruise terminals.

BOSTON

Last month ADELTE was contracted by the Massachusetts Port Authority to deliver in 2020 a SPBB for its Raymond L. Flynn Black Falcon Cruise Terminal. The contract is a result of a competitive tender process in which ADELTE delivered the best solution. The HYDRA-type Seaport Passenger Boarding Bridge (SPBB) will be capable to operate with current and future new generation cruise vessels, including those vessels with overhanging life boats, and the SPBB will replace the current system installed in 2001. The SPBB will be designed and manufactured in Spain and will be transported completely assembled from the port of Barcelona to Boston.

PORT MIAMI

Earlier this year ADELTE has also been contracted by Port Miami (Miami Dade County) to deliver two symmetrical SEDNA-type SPBBs for NCL’s new Cruise Terminal B and one SEDNA-type SPBB for Cruise Terminal C. The two SPBBs for Cruise Terminal B will be delivered in time for the inauguration of NCL’s new iconic terminal, which will be known as the “Pearl of Miami”. The SPBB for Cruise Terminal C will be delivered later in 2020. All three SPBBs will be capable to operate with the current and future cruise vessels, including those with overhanging lifeboats, and the design and manufacture will take place in ADELTE’s offices and manufacture facility in Spain. All three SPBBs will be transported completely assembled from the port of Barcelona to the cruise terminals in Miami. When the systems are installed, Port Miami will have a total of eight ADELTE SPBBs in operation at the cruise terminals B, C, D and F.

PORT CANAVERAL

Last year ADELTE also won a contract with Canaveral Port Authority to deliver in 2019 two symmetrical SPBBs for the new state-of-the-art Cruise Terminal 3. The new terminal, currently in construction, will be the homeport for Carnival Cruise Line’s newest and largest XL-class cruise ship “Mardi Gras” and the HYDRA-type SPBBs will be capable to serve all current and future Carnival cruise vessels at this terminal. The design and manufacture of the SPBBs will take place in Spain and the structures will be transported to Cruise Terminal 3 in Port Canaveral where they will be assembled. When the systems are installed, Port Canaveral will have a total of eight ADELTE SPBBs in operation at the cruise terminals 3, 5, 6 and 10.

ADELTE achieves its environmental sustainability goals without precedents

ADELTE The Boarding Company and all its companies are strongly committed to good environmental management and to minimizing the environmental impact of their activity.

As our environmental management certificate ISO 14001 establishes, ADELTE Group’s companies are proposing objectives to help the minimization of this impact and they are concluding with quantifiable results.

We are therefore pleased to inform you that with our commitment and that of all our customers, suppliers and workers, we have achieved the goal of reducing paper consumption by 35.65% by 2017 compared to the previous year, which means 570 kg less paper and approximately 28 trees saved from felling.

Water consumption has also been reduced by 7.10%, i.e. 3,448 litres less, the same amount of water that can be invested in irrigating around 60 trees or in feeding 2298 people in one day.

The consumption of ink toner has also decreased by 44% and consequently of the pollutants that this entails, such as polystyrene monomer, harmful to the skin and respiratory and ocular mucous membranes. This reduction is equivalent to 32l of oil which is equivalent to 50 kg of PET plastic with which more than 1,500 bottles of bottled water can be made.

ADELTE wins prestigious Seatrade Cruise Award “Supplier of the Year 2018”

Lisbon, 20th September 2018 – ADELTE, the world leading designer and manufacturer Seaport Passenger Boarding Bridges (SPBBs) for Cruise and Ferry Terminals, received last night the “Supplier of the Year 2018” award during the Seatrade Cruise Awards gala evening, sponsored by Global Ports Holding, at the Patio da Galé in Lisbon.

We are enormously proud to receive this award from the cruise industry. After winning this award for the first time in 2008, we are once again delighted to be recognized  for our commitment to deliver innovative and tailor-made Seaport Passenger Boarding Bridges and Global Services to enhance Cruise and Ferry terminal operations all around the world” says Jordi Floreta, Vice-President at ADELTE.

Recognizing “any firm or individual who has provided a exceptional quality service/or quality supplies to cruise lines/builders/ports etc over the past 12 months,” the Award was determined by a judging panel of industry executives, members of Seatrade Cruise global editorial team, cruise consultants, analysts and association experts from around the world.

Over the last 12 months, ADELTE has delivered at total of 19 SPBBs to Cruise and Ferry Terminals around the world. Cruise terminals in Barcelona, Cherbourg, Civitavecchia, Lisbon, Southampton, Port Miami, Port of Seattle, Keelung, Incheon, Taipei and a Ferry terminal in Brodick, received one or multiple boarding bridges from August 2017 up until the end of July 2018. ADELTE’s current project portfolio includes the delivery of SPBBs to the Overseas Passenger Terminal in Sydney, the Ocean Terminal in Southampton, the Palacrociere Terminal in Savona and Cruise Terminal 3 in Port Canaveral.

ADELTE at the forefront of safety in Operations of airport passenger boarding bridges

The incorrect operation of an airport passenger boarding bridge can cause huge losses for any airline and airport. Whether its damage to the fuselage of the aircraft or personal injuries to passengers and crew; the economic and reputational losses for an airport or airline can be disastrous.

If in addition to these risks we add the increase in security measures and passenger access control, the result is a bad boarding experience do to fact that passengers do not perceive comfort and convenience.

For these reasons, ADELTE in collaboration with Group Infaimon and Leitat Managing Technologies, have started the “SPB Project” (Secure and Safe Passenger Boarding Bridges) to improve and ensure a comfortable, safe and fast passenger boarding process at airports all around the world.
